IMPROVERS CLASSES

3 Day improvers class

Take your carving to the next level in the Forest of Dean

Tuesday 2nd September - Thursday 4th September

Join me for a 3 day improvers workshop

There are only 6 spots on this course so there's plenty of scope for tailored learning. There’ll be opportunity to practice the basics, perfect sharpening techniques, learn more advanced carving skills - including a structured approach to making spoons with crank and plenty of time to try out several different spoon designs.

Camping is included in the price and you can pitch your tent in the same field where we'll have the stretch tent. We’ll provide a communal lunch each day. I will bring my spoon collection, a fantastic opportunity to not only learn and make but also use some of the best spoons in existence.

axing crank

Learn safe and efficient techniques to use a hatchet to axe out a spoon blank with crank.

London

Saturday 18th October - 10am - 1pm

Learn safe and efficient techniques to use a hatchet to axe out a spoon blank with crank.

Using tried and tested techniques, you will learn all you need to turn a bit of branch wood or log into a cranked spoon blank with a sharp carving axe.

If you want complete creative freedom when carving spoons, the axe is your ultimate tool. When you learn to carve with an axe, you gain a sense of the grain of the wood. It's a fantastic tool for shaping objects three-dimensionally and, unlike a bandsaw, you can pack it in a backpack. The skills you'll learn on this class will be totally transferable.

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE EATING SPOONS

London

Saturday 18th October 2pm - 5pm

Learn some simple rules and techniques to get your mind, and your tools, around the sublime shapes of a Scandinavian inspired eating spoon.

This class is aimed at intermediate carvers, those who have already learnt the basic knife grips and have some experience carving spoons.

Using a prepared blank, we'll start by studying the design and learning how the form comes together when we match, blend and harmonise the top and side profile. We'll use an easy to follow sequence that helps you navigate and orientate your carving as you home in on the form.

We'll cover techniques to get in tight at the neck creating smooth flowing transitions, as well as refining the bowl and rim of the spoon to make it perfect for use.
